The scientific event Fitociencia 2019 was held at the headquarters of the Cuban Association of Animal Production (ACPA by its Spanish acronyms), in order to discuss the new research in the field of plant health in the province.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- The initiative, in its first edition, was sponsored by the Association of Agricultural and Forestry Technicians (Actaf), and the workshop paid tribute to the 41st anniversary of the creation of the Plant Health System in the province.

Yoandry Ávila Igarza, Secretary of Collaboration and International Relations of Actaf, told 26Digital that "Fitociencia is a non-competitive event that is part of the accompaniment that our Association guarantees to the Delegation of Agriculture in the territory."

In that sense, he also said that the meeting acquires vital importance, "because we all work for sustainable agriculture on agroecological bases and plant health proposes different alternatives to deal with pests that cause so much damage to productions."

Dr. Alberto Méndez Barceló, a full professor at the University of Las Tunas, gave a keynote lecture on the impact of climate change on the appearance of pests in the national territory. He shared some results of studies related to El Niño Southern Oscillation, which favors the development of diseases in vegetables. He also added that there are currently insect outbreaks, large periods of drought and excessive humidity.

Specialists from companies belonging to Agriculture, students of the Bachelor in Agronomy at the University of Las Tunas, producers and researchers of agro-ecology attended the activities of Fitociencia 2019.
