World Hypertension Day

High blood pressure (HBP) has been for several years one of the main risk factors for acute myocardial infarctions, strokes, chronic kidney failure, pregnancy complications, and others in this province. Now it is also the most frequent comorbidity associated with mortality from the new coronavirus, according to a study carried out in Cuba.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- A report published on the website of the Ministry of Public Health states that “after an analysis of all the patients aged 18 years or older, confirmed with the new coronavirus in the nation, diagnosed between March 11, 2020, when the first cases were detected in the territory, and on October 15 of that year, it was observed that more than 47 percent of the deceased had HBP.

This pathology - defined as the elevation of blood pressure figures above the values known as normal, regardless of age - affects people not only due to its own effects but also because it constitutes the greatest danger of the appearance of other conditions.

According to the Third National Survey of Risk Factors, 30.9 percent of Cubans over 15 years of age suffer from HBP, which means that "2.6 million people in the country are hypertensive, and the figure could be higher," the text quotes.
