  1. A plant for the treatment of grains is being built in Las Tunas, which will assume the processing and packing of bean and corn varieties grown in the province, destined to the wholesale and to the population.

The construction of the  industry, located in the South Ringroad, by the west entrance of the city, began earlier this year with the development of civil works and temporary facilities, and must be completed in the first half of this year at a cost of 32 million pesos.
The technology used will allow the drying, polishing, threshing and packing in different formats of about 60 tons of these assortments a day, through the use of an organic oven, which uses rice husk as fuel for its operation.
Idelmar Domínguez, technical director of Las Tunas Grain Company, told 26newspaper that the plant responds to old problems in the productive sector such as the lack of means for drying the grains, while guaranteeing greater consumer protection with packaged and clean goods.
The executive explained that the investment is one of the results of the application here of the Cooperative Rural Development Project of the Eastern Region of Cuba (Prodecor), financed by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), which benefits the municipalities of Jesús Menéndez, Puerto Padre, Las Tunas and Jobabo.
This program includes some thirty productive bases that have already been favored with tractors, harvesters, integral threshers, light harrows, plows and irrigation systems.
The initiative seeks to increase mechanization and yields in the harvest of grains, which has already had an impact on the production of the territory. It also exceeded its plan of beans with 800 tons collected from the fields (100 above the planned) and expects to deliver more than 2,700 of corn.
