The Tobacco Company of this eastern province works to achieve the thousand tons of the aromatic leaf in the current season, and at the same time promotes the investment plan to double that figure in the coming years.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- The productive purpose in this stage is equivalent to the amount materialized in the period 2016-2017, but much higher than what was achieved two years ago, when the territory began the recovery of this crop, with the commitment of collect 401 tons, which was finally exceeded .
Carlos Betancourt, general director of the entity said that ´´ a great effort must be made to overcome what was achieved in the previous campaign, as it was not an easy task to reach yields of 1.7 tons per hectare and sales of 85 million pesos.´´
The investment program prioritizes the installation of irrigation systems, farming houses and tobacco factories in the municipalities of Puerto Padre, Las Tunas and Jobabo.
It is also expected to grow in the industry for export, consolidate the production of seedlings and prioritize the use of organic fertilizers, which will result in obtaining higher quality tobacco leaves.
The province could become the biggest tobacco grower in eastern Cuba, if the projects and the adequate attention to the productive units, mainly credit and service cooperatives, become a reality.
The tobacco cultivation in Las Tunas dates back from 1700 in the place known as La Veguita, about eight kilometers from the provincial capital, where small plots existed until the middle of the 20th century, but it was in 1993 that the planting of this crop began taking on greater strength.
