In Las Tunas, there is nothing more similar than the uncertain start of the season for the baseball team and the 2020-2021 sugar harvest.

The first, after several defeats that kept the Lumberjacks away from the qualifying zone and their fans on edge, never daunted or gave up. On the contrary, they imposed their will on the imponderables and little by little, without despair, and with more solid and cohesive work, they were correcting deficiencies and climbing positions, until they achieved the proposed objective: to qualify for the next phase of the National Series.

It is what so far makes the difference between one battlefront and the other, and what makes many people in Las Tunas wonder if those who defend the harvest here could imitate the brilliant baseball team and get the contest out of the quagmire where it is.

Let's hope that this happens, because the mission of the sugar producers, to be able to count on the 152 thousand tons that Las Tunas must produce on this occasion, has a great connotation for the economy.

For now, the three sugar mills in operation - Colombia, Majibacoa and Antonio Guiteras - are capable of processing all the raw material that enters their tilters, in the same way that they show a substantial improvement in terms of industrial efficiency.

Consequently, it is in the harvest and transportation of the cane where the obstacles that prevent a better development of the campaign persist. And it is not precisely because of the deficit of some resources; but due to the lack of organization, discipline, demand, the waste of the working day and the production potential of the equipment, the depth of the analysis and the cohesion and will that still exist in some platoons of combined cutting machines and production units.

It is enough to appeal to missing resources to justify the non-compliance with the task of cutting, loading and transporting the cane.

Therefore, the daily analyzes must focus on what could be done and it wasn’t. In this sense, it is convenient to measure the task of the squad or unit by the functioning equipment.

If today, for example, only one combined machine is available, then the goal of the group for the day is to exceed the planned tons of cane, depending on the type of equipment in question. This is called efficiently using the technical means available.

In the same way, it is necessary to demand that the machines "sleep" with the corresponding maintenance; this could be one of the causes of the late start of harvest operations in the morning. It is inconceivable that in the current circumstances of the .shortage of supplies to the sugar mills there are squads that end the day without having completed their task, or at least having gotten as close as possible to the goal.

Take off the harvest of these subjective evils, and let’s will see how many more tons of cane can be cut, loaded and transported with the same equipment.

The truth is that the harvest has reached such a point, in which the imperative to mill above the 52 percent that the province currently reports does not resist any excuse, by virtue of not continuing to compromise compliance with the sugar plan, delayed already in more than 20 thousand tons.

And yes, I think that even in these adverse circumstances, the sugar producers can, as the Lumberjacks did, give the people the joy of final victory.
