The current demographic trends show that by 2050 it will be necessary to increase food production by 60 percent, including the use of water as an essential resource.
According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), water is directly involved in food production, in the production of energy and industry, as well as in important issues of the ecosystems and environment.
The water shortage is not the only problem, but also its quality, due to the high rate of pollution and industrial waste, pesticides and other elements, which is why water becomes a source of risk that could be linked to death.
Given this situation, the conservation and proper management of water becomes a priority for the world.
This situation has made various international organizations to carry out researches for years, as well as discussions and proposals to prevent a debacle in the world.
A recent research made by the American Society of Civil Engineers in the United States, estimated that to solve the needs of water in the next 20 years it will be necessary to invest some $298 billion USD for the management of waste water, and up to one trillion USD in drinking water systems to avoid a water supply crisis.
Meanwhile, FAO calls for water management that includes policies, strategies, plans, finances and general structures and guidelines to handle those issues that affect or are related to water resources. (PL)
