The Buena Vista Tank will recover its functionality as water distributor

The tank in the area of Buena Vista, as a symbol of civil engineering in Las Tunas, will return to the vitality of its functions thanks to a new project that resizes its potential, now as a water distributor to the Santos and Camilo Cienfuegos neighborhoods.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- The concrete mass, which was created more than half a century ago, has remained underutilized in recent years due to the current conditions in the pumping stations, which prevent the liquid from reaching more than 19 meters of height where the colossus begins to be supplied.

José Manuel Campos Pérez, senior specialist of Projects and Engineering of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INRH) in the province, said exclusively to the Cuban News Agency that, at present, the structure only benefits when the network of the residential area not consume, so they projected a new design to change the way of filling and make it directly with some readjustments in the pipelines.

"We proposed the continuation of the existing pipelines that start on Carlos J. Fínlay Avenue and run along Agustín Cebereco Street to Primero de Enero Street, because of its proximity to the waterworks and also because it has a diameter of 630 millimeters (mm) that will allow us to supply the 500,000 gallons of water, the capacity of this constructive marvel," Campos Pérez said.

The conception of the plan emphasizes the creation of an entrance at the top of the reservoir that will modify the existing one, since at the beginning of the construction, in the 1960s, the monumental giant was only conceived as a compensator, so its filling and delivery orifices coincide, a situation that makes it impossible to exploit its potentialities to the maximum.

"Another of the implications of this aspiration is to transform and replace the channels coming from the central station of the La Cana basin through Camilo Cienfuegos Avenue, for a 630 mm channel already installed at this moment, which will put us in better circumstances for the supply to several communities without being affected by the adaptations to the majestic building", emphasized the specialist.

Recognized as the first aqueduct of the capital city, the building is considered an enclave of reference for locals and visitors; it is a true jewel that brings together utility and strength as an eternal guard of the heights and that, to the delight of all, could return to its splendor.
