Some five thousand quail will also contribute eggs

The raising of rustic chickens and quail with the use of alternative food and green grass constitutes a promising program that is implemented in Las Tunas for the production of eggs and the sale to the population.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Manatí is the municipality that advances the most in such an objective, which has its greatest development in the community of Roo with the construction of ships that already welcomed the animals, Pedro Calero Díaz, Director of the Poultry Company in this territory of eastern Cuba, told the Cuban News Agency.

The project includes several ships for the breeding of 2,500 rustic chickens through natural feed sources; as well as five thousand quail that will also contribute eggs.

Calero Díaz explained that the program does not depend on the imported feed so two hectares are allocated, which are divided into grazing quarters; four others are used for planting protein plants.

Sorghum, mulberry, sunflower, and guava, among other species, are cultivated, as a guarantee for poultry feeding, said the manager, who stressed that so far the project march as scheduled.

Quail eggs, although smaller than chicken’s, are an important source of vitamins and mineral salts, and contain 13 percent protein and 155 calories per 100 grams, besides other nutrients such as calcium, phosphorus, iron, and zinc.
