Without losing sight of its main mission and protection measures, the Sugar Company on the Eastern Balcony is devoting significant efforts to boosting agricultural production, in order to meet the demand of the harvest and provide more of that food to the province's battle against the terrifying coronavirus.

Las Tunas, Cuba - The capacity to achieve this goal, in the midst of not a few limitations and an extremely complex harvest, was demonstrated during the first semester, a period in which the entity not only oversaw all the plans -including the state orders- but also surpassed what was achieved in the same stage of the previous year.

In the production of milk, beef and pork, for example, the turnover allowed it to allocate a good amount for self-consumption and award the state 78,100 liters and 113.9 tons, 104 and 133 percent compliance, respectively.

The same happened with the collection of food, grains and vegetables, because of the 522.8 tons planned for the quarter, the final result exceeded 750.

After this positive balance and in line with the indications of the Defense Council in Las Tunas, regarding the fact that the production of food and its balanced distribution is essential to face the COVID-19 in the province, the Sugar Company accelerates the planting of short-cycle crops in sugarcane areas with irrigation that currently remain unoccupied.

As a result, agricultural workers in Azcuba expect to harvest more than 200 tons of food, grains and vegetables in April.

The effort also contemplates making a good quantity of beef and pork available to the State, based on the productive chain carried out by the Tecnoazucar Base Business Unit (UEB), to increase the integrated production of foodstuffs that substitute imports, based on better use of the industrial capacities installed in the sugarcane plants.
