Iran has conditioned its assistance to the bilateral dialogue proposed by the United States on the reduction of hostility against Tehran and the return of Washington to the nuclear pact signed three years ago.

Tehran.- "Respecting the Iranian nation's rights, reducing hostilities and returning to the nuclear deal are steps that can be taken to pave the bumpy road to talks between Iran and America," Hamid Abutalebi, adviser to President Hassan Rouhani, wrote on Twitter.

The official stressed that the agreement reached in 2015 on the Iranian nuclear program was an achievement and should be accepted.

US President Donald Trump announced on May 8 the unilateral withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCOPA) and new economic sanctions against the Islamic Republic, actions rejected by the international community.

Yesterday the president was willing to meet with Rouhani without "preconditions."

However, shortly afterwards, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned that to start a dialogue Iran has to make fundamental changes.

Meanwhile, Garrett Marquis, spokesman for the National Security Council, said that Washington will not eliminate any sanctions until it observes "tangible, demonstrated and sustained" reforms by Tehran.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi ruled out yesterday the possibility of discussing regional issues.

"The hostile actions of the United States against Iran hinder any possibility of talks between Iran and that country," the spokesman said at a press conference.

Among them, he cited Trump's decision to withdraw from the JCOPA and the imposition of new sanctions.

"Mr. Trump thinks that every morning the world wakes up with him. One should not take him seriously," he said. (PL)
