The commissioner of Economic Affairs of the European Union (EU), Pierre Moscovici, defended today multilateralism against the sanctions adopted by the United States against Iran after withdrawing the nuclear agreement with that country.

Paris.- In statements to the radio network France Info, the representative of the regional bloc advocated to "keep betting for a multilateral vision of the world, pacific and out of the logics of the sanctions or of protectionism."

The statements are made as new U.S. sanctions against Tehran are enacted, despite the numerous calls worldwide to preserve the nuclear pact.

Moscovici said Europe should have a different stand than that of the U.S. and repeated that the nuclear agreement with Iran "is a good agreement" whose preservation is very necessary.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of France recently published a joint communiqué of Paris with the EU, Germany and the United Kingdom, in which they expressed rejection to the round of sanctions coming into effect today.

"We deeply regret the reposition of sanctions by the U.S. as a consequence of its withdrawal from the nuclear pact," indicated the parts.

After saying the treaty "works and responds to its objective," they also deemed it "essential for the security of Europe, the region and the whole world." The text was signed by the head of European diplomacy, Federica Mogherini; and the Foreign Ministers of France, Jean-Yves Le Drian; Germany, Heiko Maas and of the United Kingdom, Jeremy Hunt.

It was also signed by the ministers of Finance of France, Bruno Le Maire; of Germany, Olaf Scholz and of the United Kingdom, Philip Hamond. (PL)
