Municipal and provincial authorities assessed damages caused by the rains in Jobabo

The constant rains in the northern region of Jobabo, and neighboring municipalities, caused a considerable increase in the flow of the Jobabo River and left various areas of the town cut off. Manuel René Pérez Gallego, president of the Provincial Defense Council (CDP), and Jaime Chiang Vega, governor of Las Tunas, along with local authorities, toured the affected places.

9:00 A.M.

Jobabo, Las Tunas.- Groups and subgroups of the Civil Defense in the municipality reported this morning on the conditions of the municipality to the president and vice president of the CDP, who came to the territory to verify compliance with the oriented measures.

The situation is very changeable from one minute to the next, so the data varies constantly. At 9:00 in the morning, the conditions remained complex in Jobabo, and although the rains were not significant in the last hours, intense precipitations have been registered to the north.

At the end of this information, they specified that the Jobabo River was still swollen and receiving notable volumes of water due to the discharge of the Jobabito dam. The hydrographic network is in conditions not seen since 1993. All the rivers and streams are swollen.

Municipal and provincial authorities assessed damages caused by the rains in Jobabo

The settlements to the south and west of the municipality were completely cut off. Constant communication is maintained with the Civil Defense Management Post. Since Friday afternoon, most of the residents in low-lying areas have been taken to high and safe places, especially in the Los Sitios neighborhood and in the suburban area near the banks of the Jobabo River, and the Limones Stream. There are 14 people in the evacuation center.

Until now, rescuers from the Provincial Fire Department are trying to cross the river to transfer to the city 10 residents of San Antonio de Los Sitios who were isolated and took refuge in the Campismo Río Jobabo facilities.
Although it had not been possible to rescue them, yesterday afternoon officials from the Ministry of the Interior went there in very extreme conditions to assist these people and, in the event of a complicated situation, to look for alternatives for their rescue.

At that time, dozens of families from vulnerable areas around the river and the Limones stream, which borders the city, had moved to high areas. The latter, at night, began to decrease -at least in areas of the Highway-, although neighbors who were in the vicinity claimed that it had joined the Jobabo River.

After midnight yesterday, the rescuers had to stop the actions to cross the river due to the complicated access conditions. Constant communication has been maintained, and everyone is well.

Provincial and local authorities tour Los Sitios. In this area, which was flooded yesterday, the water was rapidly decreasing and now the damage is recovering, mainly in the houses. The greatest need here is the supply of drinking water because the wells have become contaminated.

The flow of the Jobabo River has decreased compared to the level it had on Friday.
