Quito.- The team is made up of 21 expeditionaries, including officers, crew and civilians from the Ecuadorian Navy and the Ecuadorian Antarctic Institute led by Commander Germanio Granja Jiménez.
The Antarctic arrival is scheduled for January 25, the Foreign Ministry said.
Part of the work will be to continue construction of the station's fifth module, aimed at "command and control" tasks.
This year, an Ecuadorian Navy officer and a researcher from the Navy's Oceanographic Institute are aboard the vessels "Carrasco" from Peru and "Arc 20 de Julio" from Colombia, to carry out specific technology transfer and research activities on board marine platforms, while travelling in southern waters.
The team has the support of Spanish, Colombian and Chilean researchers.
The Ecuadorian Embassy in Chile and the Naval Attache Office are helping to boost logistical support for the Chilean Navy based on the Scientific Cooperation Agreement on Antarctic Issues and the Specific Agreement on Logistical and Scientific Activities in Antarctica between both countries.
Quito joined the Antarctic Treaty in June 1987 and in December of the same year made its first expeditionary trip to the so-called White Continent, while it was admitted in July 1990 as a consultative member of the Treaty and as a full member of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research in 1992.
There are 22 permanent expeditions to date, with an active presence in that region, which plays a key role, along with the Antarctic Ocean, in regulating processes such as climate and carbon dioxide absorption. (PL)
