Despite that conservative parties arrived to power seveal Latin American countries, social and women movements were more enthusiastic and this is reflected also in the CSW, she said.

In that sense, she stressed the positions of that área in issues such as sexual and reproductive rights, and the protection of women in health systems, among others.

What happens now in Latin America is very interesting and there is great activism of women, they are in the front line, she emphasized. That is why they have a strong voice ansd role to play at the Commission of the Judicial and Social Condition of Women to be held from March 11 thru 19.

Latin American and Caribbean countries assumed serious commitments and all ratified the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women. Fourteen of them also ratified its Facultative Protocol.

According to international agreements and the Action Platform of Beijing, several nations started acting to promote gender equality.

They did it through the modification of their Constitutions, the creation of ministries or institutes on women issues, the reform of their civil codes, and the typification of gender violence as a crimne and the establishment of quotas of gender for political posts, among others. (PL)
