'US congressmen try to codify unilateral measures against our nation so that only Congress can repeal them,' said Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Serguei Ryabkov.
'Our enemies in the US legislature try to trample by any means any emergence of a positive line in the ties between the two nations,' he said.
'In addition, the aforementioned body intends to increase and intensify punitive measures against our country and even apply blackmail to force them to be fulfilled by third states,' the diplomat said.
'It would be something like organizing a blockade against Russia,' Ryabkov said, clearly alluding to an initiative managed last January by 10 senators to suspend business with Russia in the energy sphere at all stages.
The aforementioned package of restrictions would be submitted to Congress and then force other nations to join the United States in enforcing those limitations.
'Nor is there an alarmist atmosphere in our ministry, as we understand that Trump's foreign policy team is barely formed and will need time to clearly define its priorities,' the deputy minister said.
Since 2014, the United States has announced 38 restrictive measures against Russia, which has resulted in a one-third reduction in bilateral trade.
