These days aquaculture development is gaining strength in the province of Las Tunas through private producers who make agreements with the Pescatún Fishing Company, as part of the Urban, Suburban and Family Agriculture movement, which responds to food production within or in the surroundings of cities and towns.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- To this end, a process is currently being carried out with the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR) and the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC) at the community level, to evaluate the ponds and bodies of water in which certain species such as clarias and cyprinids, which are tench, carp and grass carp, could be sown.

The tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) is incorporated into these types of fish, a very docile animal that is cultivated in almost all Latin American countries, where it is also known as cachama.

The idea that is used is to incorporate it to the breeding in fattening ponds and in smaller areas, attended by families, which would be a novelty, since in previous years it was introduced, but only for intensive cultivation in reservoirs.

The tambaqui feeds on fruits and even domestic waste, which is why in some parts of the world it is called the freshwater pig, and from these characteristics, it is inferred that it will adapt very easily to the conditions that can be created by the families in Las Tunas.

In the municipality of Manatí, there are already two affiliates that produce fish for consumption and delivery to the State. One of them has a three-hectare pond and the other, one with a surface area of more than 820 square meters.

Since not all water reservoirs meet the conditions for certain varieties, the experts of Pescatún determine which species is the most recommended in each case and guarantee the fry and other necessary resources for the successful development of the agreement.
