Several Syrian media outlets, firemen, police agents and authorities went to the aforementioned air base, after the US attack with Tomahawk missiles, and they did not see any deposits or bombs with chemical weapons there, the ministry reiterated.
All the personnel is working at the air base in total normality. Nobody is wearing special suits to handle toxic substances, said the spokesman for the Defense Ministry, Major General Igor Konashenkov.
The question now is who presented such fabricated information again to a US president as a supposed proof of the existence of chemical weapons in an annoying country to the United States, the spokesman said.
It is too much like the white powder presented by Colin Powell to justify the attack against Iraq in 2003 and the report to Parliament of then British Prime Minister Anthony Blair about supposed chemical weapons in that country, he stated.
The only way to verify if that kind of weapons were used at the air base is by means of inspection by professional independent experts, as our experts did in the Syrian city of Aleppo, said Konashenkov.
In fact, the members of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons know very well that any handling or use of toxic substances leaves a traces that can be detected weeks or even months later, he remarked.
To prove to the international community the supposed existence of chemical weapons at the air base, inspection by experts is necessary, the Russian general stated. (PL)
