A few weeks ago, the Human Rights Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives held a hearing on alleged assassinations perpetrated as part of the war against drugs led by Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.
However, in his opening speech, Philippine Foreign Minister Alan Cayetano did not refer to that issue and preferred to speak about the importance of the contributions of ASEAN, which will turn 50 years next week.
The foreign ministers from other countries, including Japan, the United States, China and the two Koreas, will join the meeting later to complete the attendance by all 27 member countries.
One of the most important issues to be debated is the recent missile tests carried out by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK); that is why that country is participating in the meeting.
According to Pyongyang, North Korea will attend the meeting 'to clarify the nature of its nuclear arsenal', which it considers fully self-defensive due to the military provocations by Washington and its allies, so it does not pose a threat or risk for any other territory, North Korean authorities noted.
