CARICOM Activates Response Risk Teams Due To Irma's Closeness

Bridgetown.- Teams of the 15-member Caribbean Community (CARICOM), in charge of giving responses to climatic adversities, activated today in Barbados the plan of regional coordination due to Hurricane Irma's closeness.

 

The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Managment Agency (CDEMA), the Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System (GDACS),the Support Team of Operations and the System of Regional Security, as well as Relief Units in Disasters are triggered according to a statement of CARICOM.

The meteorological phenomenon a dangerous Category 5 at Ritchter scale will affect in the afternoon the Leeward Islands, with maximum sustained winds of 290 kmph, located at 225 miles east of Antigua and 230 miles southeast of Barbuda.

Irma's movement is towards west near some 23 kmph during the day, followed by a twist towards west-northwest tonight.

CDEMA's authorities are preparing an operative plan of possible impacted scenarios and analyzing the most vulnerable areas in threatened countries.

A Hurricane Warning has been issued for the following islands : Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, the British Virgin Islands, Saba, St. Eustatius, Sint Martin, St. Martin and Saint Barthelemy. (PL)
