United Nations.- Natural disasters have quadrupled in the world since 1970, a scenario that confirms the importance of handling climate change, said UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

"Scientists caution us about linking any single weather event with climate change, but they are equally clear that such extreme weather is precisely what their models predict will be the new normal of a warming world," Guterres told the media.

Guterres reiterated his support for the Paris Agreement, a multilateral agreement passed in December 2015 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and thus keep rising temperatures below two degrees Celsius, even further 1.5 degrees, above pre-industrial levels.

According to Guterres, the United States, China and India have experienced the most natural disasters since 1995, including hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and landslides.

Guterres said that last year alone, 24 million people were displaced by natural disasters, three times as many as by conflict and violence.

He expressed solidarity with all those suffering the recent natural disasters in Texas (United States), Nepal, Sierra Leone, Bangladesh and India. (PL)
