The initiative is part of a series of measures to strengthen Europe's response to the serious crisis.
According to a EC statement, the project will be implemented until October 2019 and entails bringing 50,000 vulnerable people in need of international protection to European territory.
This month, the deadline for the distribution of thousands of asylum-seekers who have arrived in Italy and Greece since 2015 was due, after it was rejected by Hungary and Slovakia.
According to recent reports, two years after that measure was announced, only 29,000 refugees were relocated.
Given the inefficiency in the redistribution by quotas, the EC is now proposing to accept the asylum-seekers after negotiating with the nations of origin and to offer about 10,000 euros for each migrant received in the States that will give them refuge.
For this purpose, the EC has a 500-million euros budget and demands focusing on efforts on transit routes beginning in Libya, Egypt, Niger, Sudan, Chad and Ethiopia. (PL)
