Hurricane Irma's onslaught on the US state of Florida last September caused agricultural losses valued at $2 billion USD, said official sources quoted by the media.

Washington.- Commissioner for Agriculture in Florida Adam Putnam said that the damage is overwhelming and in many cases it will prevail for several years.

Among the most damaged agricultural products, Putnam referred to different variety of tomato, peanut, strawberry, avocado and cotton.

He also said that the citrus industry was the hardest hit, and some estimates indicate that more than half the orange crop was lost.

The US Department of Agriculture said yesterday that Florida expects to produce 54 million boxes of oranges, 21 percent less compared to the amount in 2016.

The source also said that the production of wood and milk, as well as the fishing of lobster and crab, was damaged. (PL)
