Beijing.- Hua Chunying, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, said that Beijing will continue to actively participate in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and will support its work.
"China hopes that all nations will contribute to achieving the goals of the global group to promote scientific, cultural and educational cooperation, as well as facilitate understanding between different civilizations," the spokeswoman said.
With regard to the election of a new Director-General of UNESCO, she stated that the country advocates a process in accordance with established norms and the selection of an official capable of meeting the requirements and expectations of member states.
"China wants the new leader to lead UNESCO to make new contributions to raising world peace and sustainable development on the planet," Hua concluded.
The United States announced Thursday that it will withdraw on December 31, 2018, from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, a decision qualified by several governments as a lose to multilateralism.
Israel welcomed that decision and will follow Washington's footsteps to leave the global body.
The former Minister of Culture of France, Audrey Azoulay, emerges as the next Director-General of UNESCO after being elected by the Executive Board of that organization. She should now receive ratification by the General Conference on November 10. (PL)
