Sunday is International Worker's DaySunday is International Workers' Day - commemorated every May 1st. Demonstrations are taking place around the world, with many protests against poor working conditions and low salaries.

Havana, Cuba.- While May Day, International Workers' Day, had its origins in the United States, the U.S. is one of only a few countries that does not celebrate the day.

The date was chosen by the Second International to commemorate the Haymarket affair, which occurred in Chicago in May 1886.

Labor union activists in Chicago were killed on this date in the struggle for the eight-hour movement -- eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest. (RHC)
