In front of some 5,000 residents, representing all Cubans, Vice President Salvador Valdés Mesa expressed the country’s will to face economic challenges and promote its independent development. In his speech, he reaffirmed the will to defend the Cuban Revolution in the face of US aggressiveness.
At the Major General Serafín Sánchez Valdivia Revolution Square, the people of Sancti Spíritus celebrated the 71st anniversary of the attacks on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes garrisons, which paved the way for the insurrectional fight against the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista (1952-1959).
A delegation from Vietnam, besides members of the José Martí European Brigade of Volunteer Work and Solidarity with Cuba, the Juan Rius Rivera Brigade, from Puerto Rico, and the Venceremos Brigade, from the United States were present. Also, a delegation of Cuban-Americans from the José Martí Cultural Society, an Afro-American group of solidarity with Cuba, and foreign students who recently graduated from the University of Medical Sciences in Sancti Spíritus.
This is the third time that the main event for the Moncada anniversary is commemorated in Sancti Spíritus, the homeland of Major General Serafín Sánchez Valdivia, hero of all three independence wars and a personal friend of José Martí. (PL)
