Exclusive breastfeeding is more than an act of love.

Global figures confirm a reduction in the number of mothers who choose to breastfeed at these times. Cuba, an inseparable part of this network, also faces challenges (according to recent UNICEF data) in reaching the goal of 70 percent exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life by 2030.

There are many reasons for moving away from exclusive breastfeeding and choosing to complement a baby's diet from the first months of life. They include economic, cultural, social conditions, and even beauty standards; leaving aside disability due to a medical condition. Hence, the entry into force of Decree-Law 84, which extends social benefits for maternity leave until the baby, is 15 months old, facilitating the continuity of breastfeeding, is another step to reversing this trend of early detachment on the island.

The law has among its principles the best interests of the child, and its many successes include facilitating medical care, pre-and post-natal rest, and breastfeeding for working women.

But it is clear that passing legislation and making processes viable is no guarantee of success in this type of matter; in other words, there is no point in opening new doors to the possibility of breastfeeding if there is no receptive vision at home and no sensitivity in the health system to build bridges in this direction.

That is why, in Las Tunas, the work is channeled towards knowledge and dissemination. Throughout the year, everything necessary is kept active to deepen the reasons to enphazise breastfeeding as more than an act of love, with its pillars in the proven benefits to infants.

Educational talks and debates in the waiting rooms of maternity homes, clinics, polyclinics, and hospitals in the territory; competitions, training on good breastfeeding practices, the management of the human milk bank of Dr. Ernesto Guevara de la Serna General Teaching Hospital and the importance of the effective chain of support for the mother and her baby encourage the program of action.

Of course, family support and the conviction of the multiple advantages of breastfeeding remain crucial. The community support for women to breastfeed anytime, anywhere is also significant, so that it becomes normalized and uncensored in public life.
