Some 60 mototaxis contribute to public transportation in Las Tunas City

Local passenger transport in the capital of Las Tunas has been depressed by fuel shortages, especially diesel, which is used by most freight and passenger vehicles in the province.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Reynaldo Reyes Silva, delegate of Transport, explained that of the 24 buses assigned to the local routes, only two or three have been in operation daily because, during the summer, some eight were destined for the movement of bathers to the sun and beach destinations.

One of the territory's alternatives for the mobility of passengers within the city is motorbike taxis, which use petrol, which is easier to secure and assign to the 60 vehicles active daily.

"To have less staff at the bus stops, a strategy of ten routes was designed so that these vehicles not only run between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m. but also cover the routes throughout the day. This decision was taken because of the complex situation with public passenger transportation.

"These actions to improve the mobility of the population would improve with the arrival of a group of electric tricycles in a range of 120 days, designated by the direction of the country to each province to complement the local transportation," said Reyes Silva.

The delegate of Transport also explained that private electric tricycles wishing to provide this service could apply for a transport-operating license at the municipal directorates of the sector.
