The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) rejected on Wednesday the Israeli decision to close six schools run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in occupied East Jerusalem in 30 days.
Ramallah.- The PLO Executive Committee described the action taken against UNRWA as a dangerous escalation.
It underscored that such an unjust action is a flagrant violation of the United Nations mandate granted to UNRWA.
It is part of a clear effort to undermine that UN agency’s role in support of Palestinian refugees, particularly in Jerusalem and its refugee camps, it affirmed.
In this regard, it recalled that more than 110,000 Palestinian refugees live in that city, who “depend on UNRWA’s essential services” in education and health.
Given this situation, the Executive Committee urged the United Nations and the international community to fulfill their legal and humanitarian responsibilities.
The Palestinian Foreign Ministry also condemned the measure, which deprives more than 800 young people of the right to education. (PL)
