The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, received yesterday the regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean of the United Nations Population Fund (Unfpa), Susana Sottoli.
At the Palace of the Revolution, the Head of State described the visit as very timely, as he referred to the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the collaboration between the United Nations Population Fund and Cuba.
It is a moment to recognize the representatives of Unfpa for all the work they have led at the head of the Fund, "at regional and global level", and highlighted the authority, "the prestige and the important contribution for our peoples that it has made". He ratified the support of the Greater of the Antilles to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, to the Population and Development Agenda, as well as to the International Conference on Population and Development.
"Rest assured," the dignitary affirmed, "that we will participate in all these projects, and in whatever you also call upon us, without any kind of limitation."
Sottoli emphasized her gratitude for the meeting, and because it is already half a century of reciprocal relations between the Fund and Cuba: "We have received so much from you," said Sottoli, "that it is a pleasure to be able to accompany you in good times and bad.
On Tuesday afternoon, the United Nations representative spoke about concrete experiences they have had in Cuban maternity homes, about dialogues held with pregnant women and young people, which, in her opinion, is a palpable expression of the general vision that sets the course in the Caribbean country in terms of prioritized attention to health.
Cuba continues to be a leader in these issues; and we are pleased and always honored to have Cuba accompanying us with its voice in international forums on Population and Development, he said.
