The cultivation of vegetables in the province of Las Tunas, whose so-called cold season runs until February 2023, is supported by the use of bioproducts such as fertilizers and against pests.
Las Tunas, Cuba.- Taking into account that only 19.5 percent of the soils are classified as good and the rest between fair and bad, it is necessary to intensify the use of bioproducts to obtain the first harvests in the month that just beginning.
Víctor Santos Ramírez, head of the Urban, Suburban, and Family Agriculture in this eastern territory, explained to the Cuban News Agency that a change in cultivation happens in the season, linked to the traditional vegetables at this stage of the year, such as lettuce, cabbage, and tomato.
For the proper development of these plantations in the 601 available hectares - Santos Ramírez said - compost (degradable crop residues) and earthworm humus will be used as fertilizers; while in the fight against insects, they sow repellent plants that scare away pests because of their strong smell.
The Ecomic biofertilizer plant, which was completed in the Calixto Sarduy agricultural production cooperative (CPA), with a capacity of 30 tons per year, will provide important support to the Urban Agriculture here, which will incorporate nutrients into the cultivated areas and counteract insects.
To materialize the program we have organic farms, intensive orchards, semi-protected crop farms, producers with technified plots, the so-called rustic houses, and thousands of patios in homes, the expert in vegetables added.
