Las Tunas governor and vice governor take office.

Jaime Ernesto Chiang Vega and Ernesto Luis Cruz Reyes took office as governor and vice governor, respectively. Both were elected on May 28 with more than 90 percent of the valid votes cast by the more than 600 district delegates from the eastern province of Las Tunas.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Chiang Vega is a 56-year-old engineer who will serve a second term as head of the local Government. Cruz Reyes, 39, has a degree in Accounting and Finance and is accessing this instance for the first time; when he was elected, he was the coordinator of Programs and Objectives of the Provincial Government.

Manuel René Pérez Gallego, a member of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party (PCC) and its first secretary in the province, participated in the ceremony, along with Juana Yamilka Viñals, a member of the Council of State; and Eloy Martínez, Minister of Industry.

This Sunday, also, the Provincial Council of the People's Power was established, whose mission is to lead and promote the economic and social development of the territory. According to Article 182 of the Constitution of the Republic, this is a collegiate and deliberative body, chaired by the governor and made up of the vice governor, the presidents and vice presidents of the local assemblies of the People's Power, and the municipal mayors.

Among its powers are to approve and control, as far as it is concerned, the plan of the economy and the budget of the province, as well as to evaluate the results of the management of the municipal administrations, and approve the actions that will be implemented.

The Provincial Council, which replaced the former Provincial Assembly of People's Power, can approve the policy proposals that contribute to the integral development of the province before their presentation to the Council of Ministers, besides periodically analyzing the attention provided by the entities of the province to the proposals of the voters, their complaints and requests.

Similar ceremonies were held in the other Cuban provinces.
