Seed conservation bank

A seed conservation chamber was installed in the Ramiro Núñez Basic Cooperative Production Unit (UBPC), in the southern municipality of Colombia, as part of the actions of the Local Agricultural Innovation Project (PIAL) in Las Tunas.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- A report by the Radio Victoria correspondent in "Colombia” explains that the chamber responds to the need to increase food production at the territorial level and thus achieve food sovereignty through the integration of various actors; hence the notable contribution made by the University of Las Tunas in the execution of the PIAL project.

Eddy Ortiz Leal, president of the UBPC, stressed that the installation represents a great benefit for the municipality since about 140 thousand pesos will be saved for the purchase of seeds, by putting into production most of the cooperative's lands.

This also contributes to marketing with other production units in the town and promotes sales to neighboring territories, he stressed.

The Local Agricultural Innovation Project, identified by its effectiveness since its implementation in 2007, benefits farmers in the province since it enables them to perform diagnoses and implement more profitable cultivation techniques to obtain better results.

This program has made it possible to improve the biodiversity in the eight municipalities of Las Tunas, by registering higher rates of varieties of beans, corn, chickpeas, rice, soybeans, pastures and forages, sweet potato, and tomato.
