With their traditional visit to Omaja, the members of the Finland-Cuba Friendship Association began their stay in Las Tunas, thus opening a new chapter in the ties established 15 years ago.
Las Tunas, Cuba.– Revisiting the history of their compatriots who established an agricultural colony east of the town, now part of the municipality of Majibacoa, at the beginning of the 20th century is an almost obligatory moment for European activists. The visitors met with representatives from the government, political, social, and religious organizations. As a testament to their affection for the locals, they donated some computing and audiovisual projection equipment to benefit the Yahima Cinema.
"Their collaboration will be of great value to our work in the exhibition and promotion of films in the community. We will also be able to continue fostering the development and growth of filmmaking, making it a powerful tool for social transformation and the most direct and widespread vehicle for education," said Yosleidy Vega Vega, Cinema director in Majibacoa.
Dr. Lisandra García Martínez, director of the Rafael A. Morell Oppow nursing home, expressed similar gratitude. The brigade also brought tokens of affection and toiletries, cleaning supplies, as well as bedding and clothing that will benefit the 25 permanent residents of the facility and the more than 10 who stay during the day. The care unit, like its peers across the country, is suffering the negative impact of the US government's coercive measures on Cuba's ability to acquire the products and raw materials necessary for its healthcare system.
This year, the Finnish volunteers, who formed the Victoria de Girón volunteer brigade, will continue their direct support for rehabilitation efforts at the Mártires de Las Tunas Provincial Pediatric Hospital. For over a decade, the Finnish solidarity association has made significant contributions to the gradual renovation of highly sensitive areas within the health facility, such as the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the Oncohematology service, and the polyclinic.
Until June 13, activists will meet at the Cuban Eastern Balcony with participants from the Raíces de San José community project, based on the promotion of peasant traditions. They will also engage with students and faculty from the Luis Urquiza Jorge Vocational Pre-University Institute of Exact Sciences.
