Saturday tournament at Las Tunas Provincial Chess Academy.

Every Saturday, the Armando Laguna Chess Academy hosts a tournament featuring students, teachers, and fans of the so-called “science game.” This event is part of an initiative to transform chess into a cultural, recreational, and educational force within the community.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Claudia Fonteboa Sánchez is a 12-year-old girl who, since 2023, has found in the world of chess a tool to develop new skills. Her father, Yosvani Fonteboa, accompanies her and emphasizes how this game has influenced her life. "She is quite hyperactive, and chess has helped her control herself and think before acting. This has even been noticeable at school." Claudia is no stranger to the chessboard: she has already participated in a local competition, where she won third place.

For her father, beyond winning, what is important is to learn, face new challenges, and grow as a person. "As long as she enjoys it, I'm going to support her. I think these experiences help her mature," he adds.

The tournament is part of a broader effort led by César Pérez Rodríguez, provincial chess commissioner, who emphasizes the importance of maintaining a schedule so that this sport can regain its rightful place. "The importance lies not in a single competition, but in constant practice, to reach a new booming. It's an activity that recreates, educates, and unites the community," he emphasizes.

In addition to fostering skills among young people, this series of events also seeks to feature retired players, pay tribute to local figures like José Luis Barrera, and promote a vision of this game as a means of relaxation and personal development.

During this season, weekly results will be accumulated to crown the Summer Champion. Special activities are planned for July 20, International Chess Day, with a view to a possible national event in 2026.
