The giant iceberg A68a ceased to be a threat to South Georgia, where it could cause irreversible damage to the ecosystem, a specialized source reported.

Washington.- The United States National Snow and Ice Data Center sets out that the block, which was released from Antarctica in mid-2017, is totally fragmented and it is impossible to track it as it was until now.

Weeks ago, the European Space Agency warned about the danger posed by the giant iceberg A-68a, which traveled thousands of kilometers from the Larsen C ice shelf in Antarctica.

Meanwhile, the AlertaGeo website explained that the animals' normal feeding routes could be blocked, preventing them from feeding their breeding properly.

All bottom-dwelling creatures would be crushed by A68a upon reaching land, a disturbance that would take a long time to reverse.

From that iceberg getting stuck on those islands could be there for 10 years affecting the local ecosystem and economy.

The A68a, with a submerged depth of 200 meters, was approximately the size of the English county of Somerset, with an extension of 4,200 square kilometers, and weighs hundreds of billions of tons. (PL)
