Provincial PCC plenary session in Las Tunas.

Several objective difficulties limit food production in Las Tunas, and among these are deficiencies in the use and control of land, poor management of the livestock mass, insufficient link with cooperatives and producers, and other problems that have an impact on the dissatisfaction of the people.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- These aspects were discussed by the members of the Provincial Committee of the Party during the XIX Ordinary Plenary Session, which was dedicated to evaluating the organization's work in support of the implementation of the Food Sovereignty and Food and Nutritional Security Law.

In their interventions, they reflected the transformation that is evident in some agricultural tasks, such as the collection of milk and its delivery to the industry and the obtaining of beef, which are fulfilled in the first months of the year due to the attention that has been given to them.

They also mentioned the increase of areas dedicated to various crops, the good rhythm of the current spring planting campaign, the farms declared as teaching scenarios, and the projects developed by students and professors of the Instituto Politécnico Agropecuario Manifiesto de Montecristi, in Jobabo.

However, they listed problems related to the lack of demand from those responsible for the activity, especially in the state sector, which manages 86 percent of the areas for planting various crops and raising cattle.

In the productive poles of the territory of Las Tunas, the planned results are not achieved; egg and pork production is very low, there are hardly any areas for planting malanga and yams, and there is insufficient training of professionals in related specialties.

They also pointed out that urban agriculture does not manage to keep the fields covered, there is a lack of support for leading producers, contracting does not include all the potential, there is little use of the Ecomic biofertilizer, and there are delays in the rice and bean programs.

On this subject, Osbel Lorenzo Rodríguez, first secretary of the party organization in the province, said that it is necessary to look for alternative solutions to counteract the lack of inputs and dedicate the few resources to the compact areas of certain crops.

He also insisted on making concrete projections, generalizing the good experiences, solving the non-payments to the farmers, protecting the heifers and cows, promoting silvopastoral, sowing animal feed, and other actions that will result in more food for the people of Las Tunas.

The members of the Committee also evaluated the main indicators of economic activity in the state sector, composed of 71 companies, 109 basic business units, 10 subsidiaries, and six micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).

By the way, Governor Yelenis Tornet Menéndez said that much more can be done based on the potentialities and endogenous resources of each municipality, the promotion of an exporting culture, and the substitution of imports, through economic productive projects.

Lorenzo Rodríguez added that it is necessary to reduce the budget deficit, reduce accounts receivable and payable, increase production and services, implement territorial development strategies, complete management structures, and prevent criminal acts, among other actions.
