Clerk Betty Sonia Jiménez

Betty Sonia Jiménez has been working as a clerk in these lands for 41 years. And, although to some it may seem simple, to this reporter, her story seems to be a valuable reminder of faith.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Because there are many anonymous people from Las Tunas, like her, who have dedicated their lives to constant work, in which they have been useful and valuable, without shyness or half words.

She says that she began those tasks when she was barely 16 years old, always at the hand of her father, who was the administrator of “La Favorita” first, and later he passed to “La Campana”, where, now, we talked.

Betty arrived at this food store with just one year of active work, and here, near the wooden counter that has been there since the site was created as El Chino's store, she has seen the years go by.

We talked about the children, grandchildren, and how she is going to work while still having the strength because “running errands and meeting up for that is not for me, no way!

She says that old age is the hardest stage of life. “Sometimes you get tired, it's a lifetime of hard work and you don't have the strength to carry sacks or help move certain merchandise, but I like what I do, it's useful and I can't imagine doing anything else.

As she says this, she gives us a broad smile, one of those determined smiles that do not need loud words because they carry nobility and encouragement within them.
