Milei promoted the cryptocurrency $Libra on X and Instagram

Argentine union organizations have joined legislators calling for impeachment against President Javier Milei for his alleged involvement in a cryptocurrency scam.

Buenos Aires.- Through their profile on X, the Unión por la Patria (UP) deputies considered the alleged participation of the president in a crime of this type to be extremely serious; they asserted that it is “an unprecedented scandal.”

According to the Página 12 newspaper, on Friday, Milei promoted the cryptocurrency $Libra on X and Instagram, which led to a rise in the value of the tokens (digital assets), which plummeted minutes later and left huge losses for those who entered the operations, and multi-million profits for a few. Later, Milei deleted the messages and said that it was an alleged private venture with which he had no ties. He also said that he was not familiar with the details of the project and, therefore, decided to delete the posts.

On Saturday, the President’s Office acknowledged that the head of state held meetings with representatives of KIP Protocol, who told him about “the company’s intention to develop a project called “Viva la Libertad” to finance private ventures using blockchain technology.” He admitted that the president knows one of the creators of $Libra, Hayden Mark Davis, who is the owner of the Kelsier firm, and who assured in a video that he is an advisor to Milei, although the Executive tried to distance itself from him.

Several media outlets indicated that nearly 44 thousand people lost a total of between 70 and 100 million dollars, generating strong criticism from lawyers, analysts, and political organizations such as the Unión Cívica Radical and UP.

The Central de Trabajadores de Argentina (CTA) and the CTA-Autónoma pointed out in a joint statement that this is an extremely serious event and accused the president of taking advantage of his institutional role and official communication to promote a scam, which harmed hundreds of thousands of people to benefit a small group.
