The fulfillment of the plan for the promotion of forests during the year 2023, amounting to 632.6 hectares, and 19.88 percent of forest cover are some of the results of the Agroforestry Enterprise of the province of Las Tunas.
Las Tunas, Cuba.- From one calendar year to the next, the route has had many obstacles, such as the lack of fuel and lubricants, the electrical problems that limit the work of the industry, and the exodus of workers in search of better salaries, above all due to competition with non-state companies dedicated to the export of charcoal.
It is precisely this activity that is the most depressed in the company because the number of coal miners has decreased, the profits of the entity are small, the sacks and other inputs can hardly be bought, and the transportation of the already processed product is much more difficult.
To overcome the losses due to the low production-commercialization of the leading sector, alternatives have been sought, such as a new form of business management, a reduction in the indirect workforce, the constitution of seven labor collectives, and the incorporation of various international collaboration projects.
One of these is Ecovalor, whose goals are being met with the incentive of the significant income - some 200,000 pesos - obtained from atmospheric carbon capture and retention. This environmental indicator was measured in 1,000 hectares of forest in the Charco Largo area of Puerto Padre.
In addition to forestry and the management and conservation of forested areas, forestry workers are involved in sawn timber production, the coconut and coffee programs in the plains, and the sale of firewood and charcoal to some organizations.
They also concentrate their actions on huts, bars, and walkways' manufacture, the elaboration of household furniture for vulnerable population sectors, and the housing modules, mostly located in productive areas of the territory.
The company manages four protected areas with valuable species of flora and fauna, an equal number of sawmills in Las Tunas, Majibacoa, Jobabo, and Colombia, carpentry workshops in all the municipalities, and five nurseries, one of which is technified. It also achieves productive linkages with entities of the non-state sector for the repair of the roof and the small board of the Taíno cabaret and some works in the El Cornito Motel, while supporting the protection of electrical and telephone cables and promoting nature tourism.
Las Tunas forestry workers are dedicated to using science and innovation for environmental protection and wood processing to develop products and services.
