Leaders and personalities from several countries have confirmed participation in the upcoming G77+China Summit that will take place on September 15-16, sources from the Cuban Foreign Ministry (MINREX) announced on Monday.

Havana, Cuba.- The event is an opportunity to continue to advance in dialogue and agreement from the South, and a broad and diverse space to agree on cooperation strategies, vital in these times, the MINREX stated on social media.

The Summit, which will take place under the theme “Current Development Challenges: Role of Science, Technology and Innovation,” will be attended by Presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Brazil), Alberto Fernández (Argentina), Gustavo Petro (Colombia), Xiomara Castro (Honduras), Luís Arce (Bolivia), Ranil Wickremesinghe (Sri Lanka), Filipe Jacinto Nyusi (Mozambique), and Thongloun Sisoulith (Laos), and the Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced his imminent arrival in Havana to participate in the Summit, after having attended the G20 Summit held in New Delhi, India, on September 9-10.

According to UN sources, the G77 and China Summit will represent the stage to listen to the “voice of the global south.” Guterres announced that he will advocate the use of science and technology to ensure that multilateralism benefits all countries.

The Summit was convened by the Cuban President and pro tempore President of the bloc, Miguel Díaz-Canel, and will contribute to reinforcing the unity of the member countries, as well as to decide on collective and practical actions in the effective confrontation of contemporary challenges.

Cuba assumed the pro tempore presidency of the G-77 in January 2023, with the commitment to foster the common interests of the South. (PL)
