Cuba Reports 3819 New COVID-19 Infections and 26 Deaths

Havana, Cuba.- Cuba woke up Thursday with the worst indicators in the history of the COVID-19 pandemic: 26 fatalities and 3 819 new infections.

The National Director of Epidemiology, Dr. Francisco Durán, said Thursday that there were 21 091 confirmed cases hospitalized, a demonstration of the epidemiological complexity the Caribbean nation is going through.

Cuba now accumulates 218 396 cases and 1431 deaths.

Matanzas diagnosed 1 327 new cases, Havana 645 and Santiago 387. These were the territories with the highest infection rate.

As of July 6, 1.7 million people were fully vaccinated with Cuban vaccine candidates, and some 9 million doses had been administered island-wide.

Cuban Protocol for Action against COVID-19 Modified

Public Health Minister José Ángel Portal Miranda explained the changes in Matanzas.Matanzas.- Cuba announced a modification of its national protocol against COVID-19. The measure aims to ensure that a person with a confirmed diagnosis does not stay at home for a single day.

This Wednesday, Public Health Minister José Ángel Portal Miranda explained the changes in Matanzas.

From the current epicenter of the pandemic in the country, Portal said that a symptomatic case that is positive to the rapid antigen test would not require the result of a PCR for the confirmation of the disease and, therefore, will immediately receive the first dose of the established drugs and will be transferred to an isolation center for confirmed cases.

If the patient is symptomatic, the antigen test is negative, and he or she is a contact of cases or comes from a complex area, the PCR will be performed, he said, and stressed that contacts of confirmed cases would remain isolated for 14 days and not five, even if they are negative.

Morales Ojeda emphasized that the level of coincidence of the antigen tests with the PCR tests exceeds 90 %.

The health minister added that the protocol is adjusted to the country's needs at this moment of a great resurgence due to the high transmissibility of the most infectious and transmissible strains of the coronavirus.

President and Prime Minister Analyze the Epidemiological Situation in Three Provinces

President Díaz-Canel Havana.- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez and Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz visited the central provinces of Villa Clara, Sancti Spíritus, and Cienfuegos on Wednesday to exchange with their authorities on the fight against Covid-19.

Until the first two weeks of June, these territories had been able to control the spread of COVID-19. However, they are currently experiencing a rebound in their cases.

The President asked for more responsibility from the institutions and the families; he spoke of "avoiding that with tiredness we fall into a routine" and not to think that only with vaccines will we solve the problem.

The sanitary intervention, he said, must be supported with effective measures.

In these provinces, according to their authorities, confirmed patients, those suspected of carrying the disease, and those who are positive to the antigen test continue to be hospitalized.

This is not the case for all contacts, as the capacities are not sufficient for this at the moment. So far, there is enough health personnel to deal with the epidemic, who will be joined by young graduates of Medical Sciences.

After concluding the last meeting, in a tweet, the Prime Minister summarized the exhausting but fruitful day: "We have verified the vitality of the health system of Villa Clara, Sancti Spíritus and Cienfuegos. They have the capacity and conditions to face this COVID-19 outbreak and control it".
