The Cultural Plaza in Las Tunas city has been enriched with cultural and historical elements, after unveiling a plaque with the relief effigy of the renowned Cuban politician and intellectual Armando Hart Dávalos (1930-2017).
Las Tunas, Cuba.- The local artist Nóver Olano, president of the Advisory Council for the Development of Monumental and Environmental Sculpture (CODEMA), participated in the creation of the piece; an idea that arose from the donation of a Hart Dávalos mask by Ángel Trenart, a native from Santiago de Cuba.
The Plaza, which now bears the name of Hart Dávalos, exhibits a phrase of the late historian of Havana, Eusebio Leal: To honor Dr. Hart is to honor Cuba.
Hart has had a large presence in the Balcony of Eastern Cuba, which the locals are grateful for, such as the inauguration of the Major General Vicente García Provincial Museum, as well as the Historical Archive and the development of the Cucalambeana Fiesta, in its beginnings.
In 1970, when special moments were experienced during the so-called Harvest of the 10 Million, Hart and Aydé Santamaría inaugurated Radio Maboas radio station, in the Amancio municipality.
In Las Tunas, he is also well remembered for his speech on the centenary of the capture and burning of the city by Major General Vicente García, when he placed the “Lion of Santa Rita” in its rightful place in history. His support was decisive in having the combat machete of the distinguished patriot of the Ten Years' War transferred from Santiago de Cuba to the Memorial Museum bearing his name in Las Tunas, his hometown.
Hart was a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), Minister of Education and Culture, first secretary of the PCC in the former province of Oriente, and founding president of the José Martí Cultural Society.
