The rains of recent days have damaged dozens of homes and more than 200 people have been evacuated due to the danger posed by water in buildings, whose height in some cases exceeds the knees of an adult.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Not a few inhabitants have lost mattresses and other belongings in the two municipalities. In the territory of “Colombia,” the emblematic Tana River is overflowing and its waters have filled the entire historic urban center, which resembles a large lagoon and even prevents the passage of vehicles through the main street.

In "Amancio," it has been raining non-stop for a week. The Sevilla and Yáquimo rivers run strong beyond their courses, and in the Kingston neighborhood, for example, more than 40 houses were flooded, and in the nearby Los Martínez too.

Flooding in the southern municipality of Colombia

According to witnesses, the day the waters entered the houses was sunny. Suddenly, everything was cloudy and it was like a blow of nature, with intense rain that filled the entire area of the two neighborhoods; while a little further away, the Yáquimo River ran furiously towards the houses of another neighborhood and about 400 people had to be evacuated.

According to the president of the Defense Council in the municipality of Amancio, Yaquel Vargas Castañeda, there are more than 1,620 houses in danger of flooding, which is a constant concern and occupation of the Cuban Communist Party (PCC) and the Government, together with all the organizations and entities.

She assured that the soils of the municipality are saturated by rain, and nine constituencies are under surveillance; the priority is to preserve the lives of the people and their goods, in addition to the resources of the economy.

The member of the PCC Central Committee and its first secretary in Las Tunas, Manuel René Pérez Gallego, and Governor Jaime Ernesto Chiang Vega arrived at the Kingston and Los Martínez neighborhoods and spoke with the residents who told how the events happened; they had never seen before, not even in cyclone times.

The dialogue made clear the solidarity between neighbors. A young man told how he helped to remove belongings from some houses as long as he could because the water flooded into the buildings and it was impossible to continue; with pain, he saw how some goods were left under the current.

The highest authorities of the province toured the place, spoke with other residents, with the representatives of the Defense Council, and in each case clear and precise orientations were aimed at preserving people's lives, preventing them from going out into the streets for the danger this entails, and immediate tasks were indicated for the recovery, even the rains continue.

Today the rains should remain according to forecasts. Las Tunas residents continue their daily lives, even though, always attentive to the guidelines of the Defense Councils and the Civil Defense.
