The Provincial Company of Small Cattle expect to reach the 320 tons of meat planned for this year

Although in the second half of the last calendar actions were implemented in order to increase the breeding of sheep, goats and other species, the Provincial Company of Small Cattle (Egame, by its Spanish acronym), located in this eastern region of Cuba, did not reach expected results.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Given the need for greater production to substitute imports and guarantee food, this entity significantly increased the purchase price to farmers and although it was a boost in reducing the differences between the real and the planned. They did not reach 355 tons, but only 330.

The serious situation of the territory in the first six months of the year when the drought was a constant was a factor that resulted in these negatives balances. There was a deficit of animal feed due to the debt in the delivery of feed, which reached 155 tons in December plus the lack of fuel. In addition, disease outbreaks in these animals together with the absence of several medications, including anti-parasitic drugs, did not allow controlling the condition, which affected the sheep mass.

The agronomist Julio García Cruz, general director of the Egame in the province, informed that unlike previous years, "as this entity had accustomed us, we are not at the national forefront and there were many factors that caused it." In that sense, he points out that “specifically in the production of rabbits, of 30 tons agreed upon, only 18 were obtained, because the lack of wire for the cages and this had an impact on the breeding.”

However, in the substitution of imports, Egame Las Tunas distinguishes itself by its management of excellence in the marketing of meat to various tourist centers in the country. This company contributed during 2019 about 58 tons, almost 40 more than those planned, to hotels located in the national capital and in adjacent provinces such as Holguín and Camagüey.

In 2020, the increase in the breeding of sheep, goats and rabbits is a priority for the sector. In addition to the commercialization of these species, the entity will also be dedicated to the production, so the development program is based on the delivery of two farms, one in La Dalia and another in Veguita, both in the main municipality, which will become genetic centers.

Its essential objectives are the rearing of genetically modified rams and rabbits with a more efficient breed, which will improve the livestock mass to diversify it among the producers and the production plans will be supported.

The manager emphasized the interest of the company in reaching the 320 tons planned for this year, especially if there is a good contract with the productive forms and with new mechanisms in the delivery of technological products, because those that were previously obtained through the Logistics Group (Gelma), from now on, will be marketed in the same Unit of Small Livestock, which will be more close with the producers,” he stressed.

The entity, as another of the alternatives to adopt, will attend in a special way to about 200 producers, with the purpose of working on the improvement of the broods and thus produce animals of breeds with efficient characteristics and substituting imports.
