Medical students continue knocking on doors to identify people with respiratory symptoms

Antonio Rondón Martínez is a youngster of these times. He speaks with the passion that emerges from those years in which dreams are woven and there are no obstacles. At the head of the University Student Federation at the University of Medical Sciences, he contributes to materializing projects, organizes activities, pushes his peers ... And in these days of confrontation with the COVID-19, he has been seen leading the tasks with discipline and energy that characterize him.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- “In this complex and unprecedented stage we took the step forward through active inquiry in the communities. We have also joined the care of the elderly and the search for medicines, food or some other necessary resources. It has been a wonderful experience that marks a milestone in the history of the Carlos J. Fínlay detachments,” he says.

They were seen knocking on doors to identify people with respiratory symptoms; an exercise that gave them valuable experiences for their professional development. The people recognize the worth of these newcomers who also came out to defend life.

“Those in the final year of the majors are in process of preparing to begin the exams, which begin on June 29 and run until July 11. The other groups maintain distance education with self-study and the orientation of extra-class work. The school year will resume in September and we will continue to carry out the inquiries until July 31.”

Rondón said on local Radio that each student was explained the evaluation system of the different subjects and how the dynamics will occur when they return to the classroom.

“The university student receives comprehensive training that allows us - once graduated - to give a better response to the needs of the population and to raise their quality of life. This is also recognized internationally, since other peoples value the care, professionalism and humanism of the Cuban doctors."

Rondón still has a long way to go, but being there, discovering the fascinating world of Medicine, is already a great step. He says he likes Pediatrics and will surely get what he wants. Whoever listens to him cannot help but feel the certainty that the future is guaranteed. They, the youth of today, also build a valuable history.
