Recovered COVID-19 patient Iliana Pérez

The biggest nightmare of her life is over. However, she still misses the deep sleep, the absolute tranquility, the full smile. Although she has been very brave, she still feels fear, worry, anxiety.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- At her home in the Guayacán neighborhood, belonging to the municipality of “Jesús Menéndez,” Iliana Pérez Pérez recalls - via Facebook - her experience after the positive diagnosis for COVID-19.

Since April 6, she was discharged; however, she remains isolated at her home, along with her husband, the Italian Giancarlo Fusetti. There, they receive timely follow-up from specialists, as well as the administration of medications such as the antiviral Recombinant Interferon Alpha 2b (IFNrec), a leading product in Cuban biotechnology.

“I spent a full night taking care of my husband's fever; he had arrived from the Italian province of Milan, and the next day he was transferred to Holguín as a suspect of the new coronavirus, to later become a confirmed case. I was isolated at the Los Caciques motel, where they took samples of my nasopharyngeal secretions.”

Iliana tested positive for COVID-19, being direct contact with her partner. They also took her to the Fermín Valdés Domínguez military hospital in the City of Parks, where they attend to patients with the disease in the five eastern provinces.

There she was a victim of despair, she knew that her health could break at any time, but she remained asymptomatic and never lacked the support of the medical personnel.

“Both in Las Tunas and Holguín, they treated me with great affection. I remember that a nurse sang to me from the hallway and the doctors congratulated me because of my discipline in following their guidelines. Therefore, each night, we dedicate a warm applause from my living room. ”
Her husband did remain in the intensive care for several days in serious condition, but managed to recover. "He thanks all the health personnel for the delivery, for saving his life; and he feels enormous joy because thanks to the solidarity of our country two Cuban medical brigades came to Italy to combat the pandemic, a gesture of infinite love."

Iliana keeps going. Her family was isolated, as established by the protocols of the Ministry of Public Health and, luckily, the tests were negative. She says that fear will not overcome her, which is why she opted for reading, practices physical exercises, enjoys television programming and cares for her ornamental plants.

She recommends that we all take the necessary measures, maintain discipline, use the protective mask correctly and be responsible by staying home as long as possible, because no person is exempt from contagion. Her advice is vital, don't doubt it.
