COVID-19 outbreak at Integrated System of Medical Emergencies in Las Tunas

Another institutional COVID-19 outbreak is reported in Las Tunas. The positive cases come from the Integrated System of Medical Emergencies (SIUM, by its Spanish acronym).

Las Tunas, Cuba.- “This focus is located at the headquarters of the Ambulance Center in the municipal seat of Las Tunas. A driver whose source of infection was in the exercise of the profession - we suppose in the transfer of a positive patient, without complying with all the established protocols -, infected two other co-workers, first-rate contacts: a paramedic and a nurse,” Dr. Gregory Pérez Héctor, provincial deputy director of Public Health, announces.

The manager says that, with strict monitoring, the measures provided by the country are applied in these cases.

“The studies are continuing: the health protocols have been implemented for the workers of this center. They are all isolated. Those who were working were replaced. Today, for patient care and transportation in ambulances, we have colleagues who were on vacation at the time of infection and, therefore, have no probability of contagion; or the personnel from the municipalities of Puerto Padre and “Jesús Menéndez” also provide support. We have this specialized staff to replace the isolated suspected cases.”

The province, with this, registers two institutional epidemic outbreaks at the beginning of March, close to a year since the first patients of the pandemic were diagnosed in Cuba. The other affects five older adults and three workers at the Dr. Carlos Font Pupo nursing home, according to sources from the Health Directorate.

“Our province reports 10 outbreaks, all concentrated in the capital municipality that continues in the third phase of the post-COVID-19 recovery. Of these, eight are community and two in institutions of the Public Health System. All the established protocols to stop the contagion have been followed,” Pérez Héctor says.

In the last 15 days, 76 positive cases of SARS-CoV-2 (until the closing of this information) had been diagnosed; of them, 65 autochthonous. Discipline and responsibility is the call that authorities of this eastern Cuban territory insist on.
