Las Tunas' Molecular Biology Laboratory

The local Molecular Biology Laboratory will begin to confirm the PCR diagnoses, by decision of the Ministry of Public Health, after corroborating its high effectiveness and correspondence of the results with homologous centers and, even, with the Pedro Kourí Tropical Medicine Institute (IPK).

Las Tunas, Cuba.- This was reported by Dr. Grégory Pérez Héctor, deputy director of Health in Las Tunas, during the broadcast of the Alto y Claro television radio program.

The reagents that will allow starting the revaluation of the tests are already in the province. From now on, the laboratory will have greater independence to process its samples and expedite the issuance of study information. This will have a favorable impact on medical decision-making and, of course, the reduction of the stay in isolation centers and hospitals.

From April 14 to date, the Molecular Biology Laboratory has processed more than 13 thousand samples to detect the SARS-CoV-2. Before its inauguration, the staff received training in the province of Holguín and has demonstrated skills and quality in their performance.

In the first stage, an effective response was given to the IPK indications in record time, and few days after its start, it was already reaching its maximum capacity in one day.

The Molecular Biology Laboratory, located in an area of the Provincial Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology of this city, is the most transcendental building in the field of Medicine in this territory in many years. Besides the tests to detect COVID-19, in the future, the center will favor the development of research on oncological and hereditary diseases, among others.

When the province experiences its most complex epidemiological scenario, the validation of diagnoses in the province will undoubtedly give the possibility of improving the work of the Health Sector in the face of the pandemic.
