Breast cancer prevails in Cuba as the second leading cause of death among women, hence the significance of its prevention on the occasion of today's World Breast Cancer Day.

Havana, Cuba.- Figures from the country’s Health Statistical Yearbook 2022 showed that a total of 4,351 breast cancer cases were detected in women aged 20 and over 60 in 2022.

The highest breast cancer incidence was in the 45 to 59 age group with 1,505 cases and in women between 60 and 85 years of age with 2,477 cases.

Early detection to improve the prognosis and survival of cases is the cornerstone of the fight against breast cancer in Cuba, where the health system provides women with access to timely check-ups and treatment.

The date featured by the pink ribbon also promotes support and solidarity with breast cancer patients who recognize the work done by health personnel, researchers, psychologists, and even supportive groups that work tirelessly to improve their quality of life and prognosis.

World Breast Cancer Day is celebrated every October 19 at the initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO) to highlight the commitment of society to fight off breast cancer and to raise awareness of the significance of early diagnosis and research.

According to WHO, 1.38 million new breast cancer cases and 458,000 deaths are being reported annually in both developed and developing countries.

World Breast Cancer Day urges us to reflect on the risk factors associated with breast cancer, which can be modified through healthier lifestyle habits, eating habits, and self-care.

These include frequent physical activity, alcohol consumption and smoking control, overweight, and obesity, which could have an effect in reducing the incidence of breast cancer in the long term.

It should also be noted that breast cancer is not a disease exclusive to women, as a small percentage of men can also suffer from it. (PL)
