The vice president of Maldives, Hussain Mohamed Latheef, thanked Cuba for its assistance in the health sector by providing doctors and training opportunities, the national newspaper Sun reported.

Malé.- The newspaper reproduced the information from the government’s official website about the meeting between Latheef and the Deputy Prime Minister of Cuba Inés María Chapman, in Geneva, Switzerland, where both are meeting on the sidelines of the high-level event for the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Sun highlighted the coincidence of both nations in the objectives of strengthening bilateral cooperation and the interest of Maldives in increasing these ties in the United Nations System, taking into account the presidency of Cuba of the Group of 77 (G77) plus China.

During the meeting, both functionaries spoke of the diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Cuba, established on January 29th, 1977. Their deliberations were focused on avenues for connectivity in various sectors such as technical and economic development, environment and climate change, and cooperation in the Human Rights Council, among other issues.

The vice president expressed gratitude to Cuba for its support in improving the health sector of the Maldives. At the same time, the deputy prime minister of Cuba ratified the follow-up of support in key areas of socioeconomic development.

The newspaper quoted that the meeting concluded with the hope of both authorities reinforcing the existing bilateral relations in the coming days. (PL)
